Theory Media is a marketing firm built around one idea: the senior person who diagnoses your business should be the same person who builds the fix and answers for the result. That person is Ryan Dunbar. This page is who he is and how the firm came to work this way.

Ryan spent 21 years as a commercial photographer, creating work for brands including Dove, the Guardian, and HarperCollins. Serious clients, real deadlines, and a standard where the work is either right or it isn't. That is where the firm's bar comes from.

Alongside the camera, he built and ran founder-led businesses of his own, in Winnipeg and then in Austin: proving models, buying traffic with his own money, and living inside the exact problem Theory Media now solves, the gap between a business that works and the marketing that grows it. The strategy here comes from someone who has sat where you sit, not from a borrowed playbook.

How the firm got here

Two decades of work, one deliberate firm.

Theory Media was founded in 2021 and ran alongside the studios. In 2026 it was rebuilt around the diagnostic-first model, because years of running founder-led businesses kept proving the same thing: execution without diagnosis is expensive guessing.

The craft begins
